G.S.R. 40(E). In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 31 of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (No.34 of 2003), and in supersession of the Prohibition on Sale of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products around Educational Institutions Rules 2004, except as respects things, done or ommitted to be done before the supersession, the Central Government hereby makes the following rules, namely:-

Q. What are the economic impacts of tobacco use?

A. The epidemic poses a long-term economic threat to countries and may slow their development. Tobacco negatively affects the welfare of users and costs the world hundreds of billions of dollars each year in lost productivity. If the epidemic worsens, the economic losses in highly populated developing countries will be severe. Many of these countries are manufacturing centres for the global economy and the growing number of tobacco-related deaths - half of which occur during prime productive years - will impose a heavy burden on these economies.
