Jaipur Vidhan SabhaJAIPUR: April 3, 2010:- One-fifth of the Rajasthan assembly members are scheduled to participate in an exclusive anti-tobacco sensitisation workshop for MLAs. During the one-day session on Saturday, the MLAs will be provided information about confronting the menace of tobacco abuse in their personal life and society.

"Forty MLAs have so far confirmed participation in the workshop, we plan to have sessions for all the members of the assembly" said Rajendra Singh, programme manager, Rajasthan Voluntary Health Organisation.

"The association of public representatives with a social cause is essential for effective implementation of government decision and generating a public consensus against tobacco," Singh added. It is expected that the programme will be able to develop an understanding among the MLAs for inclusion of tobacco eradication as a part of their efforts in and outside the assembly.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)

The FCTC is the first international treaty negotiated under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), aimed at curbing tobacco-related deaths and disease.

The FCTC was unanimously adopted by 192 nations at the World Health Assembly (WHA) on 21st May 2003. Among its many tobacco control measures, the FCTC requires countries to impose restrictions on tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion, establish new packaging and labeling of tobacco products with strong health warnings, establish clean indoor air controls by imposing restrictions on smoking in public places and strengthening legislation to clamp down on illicit trade in tobacco products.
